Beaches of Western Crete

Here on the Akrotiri peninsula - Western Crete we have some of the most glorious sun drenched beaches with fine golden sands sloping gently down into the warm Mediterranean sea.

Stavros Beach

A large unspoilt bay, with fishing boats bobbing in the harbour underneath a backdrop of Stavros Mountain, famous for featuring in the Oscar winning film , Zorba the Greek. Hire a sun bed and then lounge in the warm Mediterranean sun, swim in the azure waters and lunch in one of the typically Greek tavernas which ring the beach. Perfection!

Tersanas Beach

A firm family favourite, a small, quite beautiful beach where groups of children play happily at the waters edge. The golden sand slopes very gently into the warm waters while Mum's look on safe in the knowledge that the water is shallow and one has to go a good distance out before the it starts to get deeper. Here there is only one taverna with a palm fringed veranda which sits right at the waters edge. A perfect place to unwind and enjoy a cool beer whilst enjoying the most gorgeous view of the bay. Sometimes there is entertainment in the evening at the beach bar and often a game of volleyball taking place at tea time.

Blue Beach

A well kept secret! A very small sandy inlet, near a wooden taverna, which if you can drag yourself off your free sun bed, is the most lovely spot for lunch. Blue checked tablecloths, Greek music playing and fresh fish for lunch - how much better does it get? The entrance to the water is quite rocky so children play very close to the waters edge.

Kalathas Beach

The most popular beach for the locals. Larger than the other beaches mentioned - it is quite magnificent. There is an island a short swim from the shore and it is a great place for snorkelling. A lovely beach with several places to eat along the sand, the main taverna here has a Greek evening once a week with live music. Usually there is a volleyball game going on around 6pm.

Marathi Beach

Situated at the other side of the peninsula . Glorious golden sand stretches along this large crescent shaped beach. Unspoilt and quiet - a great place to chill! The tavernas are particularly good and it's a very popular spot for local Greek people to lunch, fresh fish is always available here. Sundays are extremely busy in the tavernas as locals come out early to lunch and enjoy the fantastic view.
